Brief Synopsis

Akito only wants to be a cook for life, yet his past haunts him and an accident meeting with his childhood friend, Yurika, turn his destiny around. Yurika, who is in love with Akito, is the captain of the latest battleship, Nadesico, that is on a mission. In the meantime, unknown aliens are attacking Earth where the moon has already fallen victim to their advanced technology. The Nadesico is manned by a group of weird individuals consisting of a genius girl, seiyuu(Voice Actress), secretary, a machine freak, a Gekiganger fan pilot and many others. Nadesico's maiden voyage was met with heavy resistance from the enemy and Earth Military. However, Akito with his inherent piloting skills and the zeal of another ensured Nadesico's success taking off. Thus starts Nadesico's wonderful journey to discover the truth about the aliens, being chased by the Earth's defense forces and a good deal of slapstick in between. What is the secret of the aliens? Who are they? Why are they attacking Earth? Nadesico is going to find out!!

Opinion

This is a cross between comedy and slapstick romance. Yurika, though she appears clumsy and absent minded, is a very capable captain. However, her expression of love towards Akito is one of the highlights of the anime. Later on, we are presented with a multi love relationship centering around Akito. The robots are nicely designed, but the focus of the series is on the characters and especially Ruri, who is the ship's helmsman. The plot, though it appears flimsy initially, unfolded nicely during the course of the series. One thing to note, Nadesico assimilates many other anime as a Parody. In the end, nearly everyone became a fan of the Gekiganger series and well, we even have an episode where the Gekiganger crew watches Nadesico and created weapons based on Nadesico.
