Tenchi Muyo

This is one of my favorite Animes. Many thanks go to my friend Karen who introduced me to this work. That's one I owe her for this. =] From Ryo-Ohki to Washuu's Puppets to the always present feud of Ryoko and Ayeka, there was nothing I didn't like about the TV series "No Need For". Sasami and Ryo-Ohki are just adorable.

OVA: After tricking his grandfather, Tenchi gets the keys to an old shrine. Family legend says that a hero defeated a horrific demon long ago, and the demon was imprisoned here. The hero's sword was placed next to the demon to guard it. Tenchi finds the old sword...and a mummy. Since Tenchi broke the seals, the mummy rises. Frantically, Tenchi tries to reseal the shrine and escapes. Later, Tenchi is back at school. He is startled by a girl who appears out of nowhere. This is Ryoko, space pirate, former mummy, and a rather annoyed demon. She decides to kill Tenchi, seeing as she has to take it out on someone. Tenchi escapes from the destroyed school...to find that Ryoko has decided to move in with him. Things get REALLY interesting when Ayeka, Princess of the Jurai, comes to Earth looking for her brother...the long-dead hero who sealed Ryoko up the first time. This is a very funny, fast-moving action comedy with lots of unique elements...including spaceships grown from trees and a pirate ship that is the cutest creature ever created for an Anime series, Ryo-Ohki, a Cabbit.::

1st TV: This first TV series redefined the Tenchi Universe, and is not related to the OVA's at all, other than the characters, but it's incredibly funny from the start, then gets more serious later on into some terrific action sequences.

Tenchi is a school student on his way to class when he sees two things crash. One is Ryoko, and the other is Mihoshi. Soon, Mihoshi and Ryoko move in with Tenchi, followed by Ayeka who answered Mihoshi's distress beacon, then Sasami, Ayeka's sister who came to bring her home but also got stranded when Ryo-Ohki(in spaceship form) saw Sasami holding a carrot and rammed the ship, stranding them all. Also, next is Washuu, The Greatest Genius in the Universe, who plays the part of the trapped demon in the Masaki Shrine(and her really cool puppets) and last, but not least, the responsible, and sexy Kiyone, sent to Earth to find Mihoshi, since they're partners, and unfortunately becomes assigned to the Sol System as resident officers.

2nd TV: "Lead character Tenchi Masaki moves to Tokyo, and soon enough, between his new school and temple training, you can bet that he'll be balancing yet another love interest in his busy schedule. And you didn't think Ryoko, Ayeka, and the others would be content with being left behind, did you? (*Note: I've yet to see this one, but have heard it isn't nearly as good as the other two)

This is what anime should be. It loves this series. It has love(s), excitement, weirdness, comedy, cute space aliens, and Ryo-Ohki! What more do you need? This series was release by Pioneer Anime and had branched off to so many other series (Tenchi Muyo OVA, Tenchi Muyo TV, Pretty Sammy, ect...). But you can never get enough of Tenchi. Leave it to AIC to redefine a series universe in the TV version.

The title might also be translated as "This Side Up,Tenchi" and, in fact, is carried that way at Nikaku. This is because the kanji used can be interpreted more than one way...
